Hot VWs Drag Day

Waiting to RaceARTICLE AND PHOTGRAPHS BY B. WATTS
The day started overcast and slightly cold and stayed that way most of the morning only to burn off into a nice warm Southern California afternoon that burned my bald head.

Dyno DonThe word around Irwindale Speedway was this Hot VW's Drag Day was the largest turnout ever and Dyno Don thanked the crowd throughout the day. The stands were full and remained full unitl the very last race.

There were a lot of first time racers who had to learn the proper procedures for staging but we all have to learn sometime and it was good to see them come out. A handful of oildowns slowed the progess at times but was not too horrible and the track crew did a good job of fast clean up. One oil down that occured took about 20 minutes to clean up and could have been avoided. A car spun backwards into the wall, smashing the back up really good. Instead of stopping and getting towed off the track the driver decided to start it back up and raced off down the track, oiling it all the way. This upset many and Dyno Don let him know it from the tower.

Robert HemphillIn the Quick 16 category Robert "Turbo Bob" Hemphill defeated "BusterJohn" Varela. John went all out in the finals, running a 7.159 ET on a 7.16 Dial-In, breaking out by .001 seconds. Robert had a little trouble getting through the gears but took the Q16 win at Drag Day. Susy Herbert did a lot of work to put together a Powder Puff category and had 11 ladies enter to race. Kathie Craig got the win over Candy Larsen and took home $300.00 and a $250.00 gift certificate from Bug-Pack. Look for the ladies to be back in October for the next Hot VW's Drag Day. Lino Iniquez was vicorious in Jackpot when he took out Mike Lawless and then took out the Quick 16 winner, Hemphill in Top Eliminator before being eliminated in the finals by Nick Thompson in a watercooled VW.

I want to thank "Underpressure Racing" (Tywon, Derek and Burnell) for the great food and hospitality and to Dominic "The Burnout King" Carrollo for being my own personnel tour guide for the weekend.

Feature Car of the Month - March 2007

ARTICLE BY JASON CULLEY
PHOTOGRAPHS BY ERIC ORMOSEN

Warbird is a term often used to describe vintage military aircraft that terrorized the skies during WWII. The Warbird you see on this page is a vintage 1962 Volkswagen Bug that should be terrorizing drag strips on the West Coast in 2007. Eric Ormosen or Erik "TheRed" Ormosen as he is known by to most is the owner of this Warbird.

ECPRA Season Under Way

Picture property of ECPRAWRITTEN BY ECPRA STAFF
The 2007 season opened with a bang, literally. The first car up to the line in our first round of qualifications, Todd Howard's Megabug veered hard across the left lane just as he hit second gear. He tried to straighten out, but couldn't and Megabug struck the left side wall. Luckily Todd had drawn a bye run and the lane was empty. It made a rather dramatic season opener, but the good news is that Todd came out of it with only a few bumps and bruises, and though the Mega Bug was out for the day, the damage appeared to be mostly isolated to the front end and I'm told work is already underway to get Megabug back in action . . .

Eric Calabrese Ready For The Season!

On Friday, March 16th at the Pacific Street Car Association's T&T session at the Auto Club Dragway @ California Speedway in Fontana, CA, PRA Pro Mod racer Eric Calabrese wowed the crowd with a few blistering runs down the quartermile. I am sure those Chevy and Ford guys were in shock when on the first run of the day, right off the trailer, Eric's VW laid down a 8.69 ET at 163 MPH. After a short stop in the pits Eric returned to the lanes and clicked off a 8.55 ET at 164 MPH.

VIEW THE RUN HERE (Posted on Putfile by Lance Gregory)

It looks the PRA Pro Mod record is in jeopardy this year. Eric Madson holds the current record of 8.67 ET at 161.61 MPH, which he set in October of 2006 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, NV.

The Return Of The "Fast Fiat"

If you go back to last November at the DRAG-IN at Auto Club Raceway @ California Speedway in Fontana Pat MCDermott amazingly walked away from one of the most horrific VW crashes I have seen in a while. Pat started in the right lane and immediately the car headed toward the left lane, Pat tried to get it under control but soon found himself in the left lane going towards the wall. He made contact with the left wall and then shot all the way back across the track and slammed violently into the right lane retaining wall ending in a large explosion. You can view the video submitted to Putfile by Pat himself (http://media.putfile.com/crash-fontana) if you have not seen it already.

The amount of well-wishes, and offers of support from the VW drag racing community immediately after the crash amazed Pat and he started the process of getting back on the track. As of today he is hoping to have his new version of the "Fast Fiat" ready by July 22nd, in time for the DRAG-IN being held at the same racetrack where the old Fiat raced it's final race. The chassis was sent to Ron Lummus to be media blasted and Pat cut the front half and prepped it before sending it back to Ron to install a new front half. With the help of John Troxell and John Mead, Pat found a '69 body to place on the chassis. Once he gets the transmission back from SRM Performance he can fit the new body and get it dialed in. We can't wait to see the "Fast Fiat" back on the track.

Larry Kelley - Livin' The NHRA Dream

If you visit Cal-Look.com you know longtime VW racer Larry Kelley had an NHRA dream of running in the NHRA Sport Compact All-Motor category with a VW powered car. Larry started dreaming in late 2006 and with the help and support of many in the VW drag racing world including his son Scott Kelley, Larry's dream will come true in 2007. For the engine, Don Pauter was contacted and agreed to take on the motor building duties and will be doing a majority of the engine work with Larry handling a part of it also. "The Don" as Larry has dubbed the new monster power-plant will not be ready for the first race of the season so he will be running in the Quick 16 class until it is. The NHRA Sport Compact series opens with the Palm Beach NHRA Sport Compact Nationals being held at Morosa Motorsports Park in West Palm Beach, Florida from March 31 - April 1. If you are in the West Palm Beach area on race weekend be sure to make it out and support him in his endeavor and let the NHRA know what kind of following VW's have. We will be keeping an eye on Larry the entire season so keep a lookout for some race reports/recaps. For now enjoy some pictures of the progress.

Air Cooled Drag Racer Tribulations w/Michael Meyer

I am excited and honored to announce the addition of a new feature here at Air Cooled Drag Racing Monthly, Air Cooled Drag Racer Tribulations with Michael Meyer. Michael has agreed to share his experiences during the 2007 drag racing season through monthly articles and here is his first installment, enjoy!

TIME FLIES

As some may know, I started my racing career on the pages of the now defunct VW Trends magazine. From the day I picked up the motor and transmission-less shell of a racecar, to the days of bracket racing in the NASA VW drag racing series, onto the index racing PRA Super Gas and then the failed jump (or fall depending on how you look at it) to the PRA’s Super Street heads-up racing. Although many despised VW Trends for it’s Super “Betle” content, I enjoyed sharing my failures and successes on their pages. And now, many broken parts later (music please) ACDRM will be the new source of my ramblings. Enough with the announcements, on to the content . . .

NASA Adds Another Sponsor

From Greg Urrutia (NASA Pro-VW Drag Racing Series Director)

Newest Sponsor to join NASA is Mountain View Home Improvement. Longtime NASA Racer/Entrepeneur/Business Owner/VW Fanatic, Brian Gomez has come onboard as a NASA sponsor. Brian, Owner/Founder of Mtn. View Home Improvement has pledged $25.00 per race ($50.00 for the double points race) to the Top Qualifier. This cash award enhances the TQ award offered by Bugformance of Sacramento. NASA continues to invite the novice racer and the seasoned veteran looking to get more seat time and/or TNT sessions. The NASA Racing Family consists of a friendly bunch of VW enthusiasts enjoying the full performance of their VW's. Are we competitive? Sure! But it goes far beyond your normal VW event. We are a core group of VW fanatics that truely enjoy the company of like minded individuals. We race hard, but winning is not the ultimate reward. We cheer each other on and encourage the newbies. We will go to every extreme to help out our NASA brothers and sisters to keep them in the program. Our racing philosiphy and points dispersement has been adapted and copied by many other "Professional Racing Orginazations", yet we remain a grass roots entity. Sure it's great to win. A NASA win is winning among the best in the sport and the rewards are significant. But it's much more than that. It's about a great VW Drag Racing program with simple rules and the connection to long lasting friendships. Ask anyone that has raced a NASA Race . . . . a great program, with great rewards, and friendships that will last a lifetime.
Our Dedicated Sponsors: Mountian View Home Improvement, Zamp Sports Corp, Matt Davis Racing, Bugformance of Sacramento, Wolfgang International, Rancho Performance Transaxles, Low Bugget.com, Big Wig Racecars, Phoenix Racing Tires, Ocean Street Video, Mello Insanity Racing, Porter's Precision, Jansen Enterprises, Cal-look.com, ACTop20.com, Meyer Racing, Carapace Web-Design, Greg's VW Service, Elk Grove VW, RichLynn Vineyards

NASA Pro-VW Drag Racing Series Race #3

ARTICLE BY J. CULLEY AND G. URRUTIA
PHOTOS COURTESY OF G. URRUTIA
Wayne Axford (Mellow Insanity Racing/1-800-CLEANUP) claimed his second victory of the 2007 season in only the third event. In each race there has been an Axford in the winners circle with Chad Axford winning the second event and Wayne winning the other two. Rookie Steve Teeters was the runner-up and also had the best light of the day with a .011 RT. Top qualifier of the day was John Rocha (Bad Dog Racing/Greg's VW Service) with a .004 RT during qualifications and also had the best package with a .153 in Round 1. Low ET and fastest run of the day went to Chris Brown (1-800-CLEANUP) with a 11.00 ET and a pass at 123.00 MPH.

The most memorable event of the day took place when Jason "J-Dog" Lang launched his DragBus in second round bye run and lifted the front wheels about 18 inches off the ground. The crowd and the track were amazed as many had never seen a VW Bus do that before. Recent transaxle work (Porter's Precision), carb tuning (Greg's VWService), Kirkey Racing seat and harness (Jason and Greg), drag slicks(Rick and Gloria) have made for some dramatic performance increases. Watch for the DragBus to continue to impress and excite the crowd.

Sweetest racecar of the day had to go to Patrick Friel in his 1953 Split Window Ragtop. An unbelievable car that is fit for a museum display but Patrick runs it down the quartermile instead.

March - Air Cooled Drag Racing Monthly

It was almost a year ago that I started the process of putting together this project now known as Air Cooled Drag Racing Monthly. There are so many people to thank I could go on all day but there are few that I do want to mention here such as Brian Watts, Eric Ellis (TVWDRA), Carl Nolen (TVWDRA), Greg Urrutia (NASA), Ray Iddings (VolksCast Radio), Jim Smith and the Outlaw Flat Four Drag Racing Club, Stephen Hawes (VRN) and everybody else who has visited or contributed in any way - THANK YOU!

For March we are working on our Feature Car of the Month and should be released soon so look for that. Also coverage of numerous events including the NASA Pro-VW Drag Racing Series Race #3, Silver Dollar Showdown #4, Hot VWs Drag Day, AIRKELWD VW Nationals. We are always looking for VW racing fans who are attending events to report on the drag racing results and submit photographs, if that sounds like something that interests you please email me. The ACDRM.com Virtual Trading Cards are still being made so check those out and we are also in the process of trying to get these printed and if/when we do look for details on how to order them.

So stay tuned for greater things and if you have any comments or suggestions (good or bad) I can be reached at jculley@acdrm.com, and again THANK YOU.
