(August
17-19, 2007) |
Cory
McClenathan and the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) visit
Reading, Pennsylvania for the NHRA Toyo Tires Nationals at Maple
Grove Raceway. This is the last chance for a few racers to
make their way into the Top 8 in their classes and the NHRA Powerade Drag Racing Series Countdown to the
Championship but unfortunately Cory McClenathan will just fall short
of that this season.
Cory qualified in the #11 spot
with a 4.597 ET at 320.81 MPH and will face Larry Dixon (4.557 ET at
321.96 MPH) in the first round of eliminations.

STYLE GASSER-DANGERINE
(August 5, 2007) |

If you know
anything Leonard Otto and his brother Pierre you would say they were
raised in a garage between engine blocks and project cars.
In the garage is where they developed their passion for transforming
wrecks into pieces of beauty that tear up drag strips. Leonard
has been drag racing since the early '90s and got into the VW drag
racing world a few years ago.

~ HIGHLIGHTS FROM
JULY 2007 ~ |

VOLYMANIA 2007 WAS
MUY BUENO!
(July
31, 2007) |
ARTICLE
AND PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY OF ERIC ELLIS - Early morning rain
fell all over the island on Sunday 7/15, but by 10:30 am the sun was
out, and people were pouring in the gates of Ponce International
Raceway in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
By the time that show car
judging and racing eliminations began after noon, the parking
lot, pit area, and stands were packed with "Volkys" and their
owners. I'd say that the attendance at this VW event rivals some
of the "biggies" that I've been to in the U.S. - despite the
iffy weather in the A.M.
"Team USA" consisted of Ken
Fisher (FL), David Dulany (TX), Daniel Rodriguez (NJ) and Bill
Danner (PA). Bill, Daniel, and David competed in the Pro Stock
class, along with 11 other cars from Puerto Rico(!). Ken Fisher
made the trip with his killer New Beetle, and match-raced
against Ivan "Rabbit" and his badass Corrado.

High winds and a tough to
tame track resulted in the decision to shorten the racing to 1/8
mile. Due to the high number of racers in attendance, and a few
cleanups, final rounds in all classes were run after dark.
Ken Fisher came out on top
in the match racing. The best runs for Ken and Ivan were a 5.49
@ 133mph for Fisher and a 5.76 @ 132mph for Rabbit.

Unfortunately, two racers
from Team USA (David Dulany and Bill Danner) went out early
in Pro Stock class eliminations, but U.S. racer Daniel
Rodriguez finished in third place. In the Pro Stock final,
it was veteran Jorge Diaz in the "Profetta" Notchback versus
young gun, Freddie Matías - both with beautiful cars. Jorge
took the win, followed by an emotional starting line
celebration with friends, family, and fans.
In the Pro Mod class,
Nelson Alemán used his "El Castor" entry to defeat Felipe
Lozada and "Don Pipe" with a 5.85 @ 129mph versus a 7.43 @
89mph.
U.S. racers who were
invited to Volkymania, but didn't make the trip down to the
island missed out in a big way - maybe next time!
A big thank you goes out
to Edison Lluch, Hugo Umpierre, Ruben Hernandez and everyone
else from Puerto Rico who showed me a good time and great
hospitality.

ERIK'S RANTS!!!
(July 12, 2007) |

Admit it . . . we all wanna be
cool. We all wanna look like the super-stud with balls of steel,
ready willing & able to do anything challenging or do things that
many folks would consider crazy. We all want to be "that guy" that
others talk about. We all want to be bold, tough, and fearless, and
claim we ain't ascared of nuttin'. Well, ok, I'll concede -- I'm to
blame as well, to a certain degree. We all want to do things that
make others envious, because somehow it helps support our own
self-worth. Human nature, I guess. But at what cost? At what cost to
ourselves? At what cost to our families? At what cost to our
financial stability?

DINO BAKOLAS: PAST,
PRESENT AND FUTURE
(July 8, 2007) |

ARTICLE BY JASON CULLEY
- Dino Bakolas of Las Vegas, NV has been
drag racing since the early '80s, but like a few in the VW drag
racing world he didn't start in one. His first quarter mile
vehicle was a Chevy Vega. He also raced a '66 Chevrolet Nova that
was his daily driver during the week and ran 10's at the drag strip
on the weekends. You could say Dino was primarily a Chevy guy
until some friends dragged him to a Bug-In at Orange County
International Raceway and he was blown away by how fast these four
cylinder Volkswagens were getting down the drag strip.
