NHRA Sport Compact Springnationals

ENGLISHTOWN, NJ (May 6, 2007) - This weekend the seventh annual NHRA Sport Compact Springnationals is being held at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ.

In the Quick 16 category a few air cooled VW's are qualified heading into the final round of qualifying on Sunday, May 6th. Larry Kelley and the Cal-Look Express ('56 Beetle) is qualified #9 with a 10.604 ET at 118.44 MPH, Jerry Lewis ('68 Beetle) is qualified #13 with a 11.380 ET at 128.82 MPH, Steven Pocaro Sr. ('69 Beetle) is qualified #14 with a 11.543 ET at 100.76 MPH and Thomas Borgla ('65 Beetle) is qualified #16 with a 12.163 ET at 108.42 MPH. The top qualifier in the Quick 16 category is Jose Roman ('80 Toyota) with a 9.009 ET at 147.96 MPH.

Former VW racer Scott Kelley is qualified #3 in the Honda Tuning Magazine All Motor category with a 9.777 ET at 138.47.

The final round of qualifying will be held at on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Eliminations will be held after opening ceremonies which begin at 1:30 p.m.

SUNDAY UPDATES (May 6th, 2007)

Jerry Lewis (#6, 10.246 ET at 136.14), Larry Kelley (#13, 10.604 ET at 118.44 MPH) and Steven Pocaro Sr. (#16, 11.543 ET at 118.99 MPH) all qualified for in the Quick 16 category. In the first round Lewis ran a 10.444 ET (10.24 Dial-In) but lost to Kevin Francisco who ran a 10.716 ET (10.70 Dial-In) by 0.0875 seconds (approx. 16 feet). Steven Pocaro Sr. went a little to quick 10.998 ET (11.54 Dial-In) and lost to Salvador Gonzalez who had troubles and only managed 13.714 (10.28 Dial-In). Larry Kelly was the only VW to make it out of the first round when he beat Brandon Millman with a 10.578 ET (10.60 Dial-In) to a 10.029 ET (10.24 Dial-In). Larry was a no-show for his round two match with Jose Roman. Still not sure why but will let you know if we find out.
